EU Thermal Management Regulation 2024 | Qirun EV Control Valves

Updated EU Thermal Management System Regulation for New Energy Vehicles and Its Impact

The European Commission recently released the latest EU thermal management system regulation for new energy vehicles, effective from July 2024. The regulation emphasizes energy efficiency and safety of battery temperature control systems and imposes stricter requirements on control valves used in thermal management systems.

Key Elements of the Regulatory Update

1. Enhanced Energy Efficiency Standards

Thermal management systems must achieve a COP of at least 2.5 at ambient temperatures from -20°C to 45°C, a 15% increase over the current standard. This requires improved flow accuracy and faster response speed for EV control valves.

2. Safe and Redundant Design

Critical control valves must include both mechanical and electronic protection to prevent failures from a single point. Control valves in battery cooling systems must meet ASIL-C functional safety requirements, ensuring reliability and safety.

3. Environmental Material Compliance

Materials containing hazardous substances, including certain plasticizers and flame retardants, are prohibited. This impacts material selection for valve bodies and seals, requiring high-quality, eco-friendly components.

4. Full Life Cycle Assessment (FLCA)

For the first time, the regulation mandates carbon footprint data for components over their full life cycle. Suppliers must provide FLCA reports, promoting sustainability in automotive thermal management.

Qirun Auto Parts’ Compliance and Solutions

As a leading supplier in the EU, Qirun Auto Parts has proactively established a dedicated team to address these regulatory changes. Our newly developed thermal management control valves for electric vehicles are fully compliant with the updated EU standard and certified by TÜV Rheinland.
